Awhile back I had the opportunity to photograph Cambrian College’s Lil’ Big Rig here in Sudbury, so on a early cloudy morning we “trucked” it out to Dynamic Earth where I could throw my spin on creating a Bad Ass Image that this machine deserves.
James Hodgins is a mining industrial commercial photographer based out of Sudbury Ontario
I just finished photographing Sylvia Barnard (The President of Cambrian College)………….again, but this time we decided to go a different route than the previous images we captured. Darla and the marketing team wanted to show a different side of Sylvia, one that the students could connect with on a familiar level, sooooooooooooooo, out comes the motorcycle (Sylvia rides a classy BMW and has ridden 10000’s of kilometers). Yes, even Presidents of Colleges can’t resist the pull of the open road on a motorcycle. This was just 1 of several different sessions we photographed today, and to be honest with you, Sylvia is an extremely approachable woman, always smiling, and always listening (of course she does have some great stories from her motorcycling adventures). Thanks again Darla, Sheri & Sylvia. This was a FUN session!
Of course, what is a visit to Cambrian without getting your feet wet.
Here is an image I created today for the Cambrian College Fire Services department. Sometime this summer we will be heading outdoors to get some live fire images, but today (as it was cold) we settled for indoors. I lit this image with 4 lights and one flash using a collapsed umbrella and 30 inch softbox. This shoot gave me some great ideas for upcoming images for this years Sudbury Firefighters Calendar. I look forward creating more images for this Cambrian Department.
Of course, I am not attending, but documenting. Today was another series of images for the Cambrian College Programs. This image was metering the amount of “wind” created by the fan. It was pretty technical, and of course I tuned myself out (like I usually do).
Over the past several years James Hodgins Photography has created a great relationship with Cambrian College (even though I dropped out). Every year we are contracted for photo assignments for their Academic Calendars, Course Catalogs, Event Promotions, and just about anything else that has to deal with professional photography. Even their annual Christmas Card card photo is done by us.
Of course. This is just the photography. Behind the photography is the wonderful design skills of Darla Laframboise and her team in the Marketing Department. Check out Darla and Me last month at the unveiling of the new Cambrian College Mobile Trades Unit. This unit will travel across Northern Ontario and deliver apprenticeship and customized training to Aboriginal, rural communities, and mine sites.
You know, sometimes photography isn’t all that clean and pretty. Sometimes you have to get down and dirty to get the shot. That’s basically what I had to do today for one of my shoots. This image was created for Cambrian College under the guidance of Darla (yes Darla, this post is for you) and I guess we should have gone over the specifics a little more carefully haha. Don’t get me wrong, I love getting dirty if it will make a great shot, but normally I have my “Never Wear Again” clothes that were specifically “created” for these types of shoots. Oh well, I now have a new set of “Never Wear Again” clothes for more upcoming “Down & Dirty Shoots”. At my defense, I was trying to get in between the tires without my body touching them, it’s hard to do. Like usual shooting with Darla is a blast, much laughter, jokes and humiliation. I can’t wait for tomorrow. 🙂 Note: Yes the last video shows a female, and no I did not do some fancy smancy photoshop stuff. We shot both male and female for the image.
I recently received an email inquiring the use of some of my images for a companies marketing materials and within the email was a common sentence I usually see "We have done an exhaustive search of the stock photo sights and are coming up short". Read More
