Inside the mill at a gold mine

Thursday, April 9th, 2015

I had  a very “quick” opportunity to photograph inside a mill at a Northern Gold Mine this past week with some great Metso employees.  Due to time constraints unforeseen we had a 30 minute window to capture some images but we made the best of it and came out with some great shots.   Looking forward to working with Metso again, very professional!

“Been working in this business for almost 28 yrs and had never been involved with any kind of photo shoot.    You were great to work with and made the experience quite enjoyable despite the time crunch we were in.”

Underground Everywhere.

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

It seems I am photographing more and more underground these days, and I’m not complaining at all. I love it.  I love everything about it.  Maybe it’s because in high-school I took homec and typing instead shop (although typing and cooking did get me some good gigs and some great dates hahahaha) and combining my love of photography with heavy machinery is something that is always exciting to me.  I look forward to exploring more underground communities in the next year in which I call the “Age Of The Commercial Gigs” with James Hodgins Photography.

It’s Mud Sweat & Gears Again!

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

I just spent another day underground at Coleman Mine documenting the mining process for their photo archives and it’s quite the change of pace of maternity, dog’s & baby sessions.  I really enjoy my commercial photography gigs as it pushes my abilities as a photographer to create something unique and high impact out of something that is mundane and “cold”.  Lighting is always an issue when you are thousands of feet underground and I thought my 5 strobes would be enough (and it was), but I know I could do even better with a just a few more lights………..oh well, next time.   The real trick is to get your lights in the right places to illuminate the scene and subjects, but have them out of frame so you don’t see them.  Sometimes this is tricky.

I will be posting more of my commercial images in the next few weeks as I will be underground several more times in the next few months.

Full Steam Ahead At The Sudbury Smelter

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Here is an image I photographed at the Sudbury Smelter shipping division.  I tried lifting the bag myself but it seems to weigh more than 125 lbs.

Here are some images I created for Atlas Copco’s new line of Excore drill bits.  They launched earlier this year and have now used my images in their Promotional Video.

The Mining Maniac – Hodgy Humor

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

While I was on my commercial shoot today a bunch of us where going through my phone looking at the various images I have uploaded to it.  We had a good laugh over my “Mining Maniac” image that I believe I took somewhere in Utah (It was somewhere in the States) years ago.    I remember finishing the actual image we needed for the project and while taking a break I asked “Miner Moe” to make a crazy face like he was playing an Xbox, because the controls he was using was controlling some heavy equipment, it reminded me of a video game.  Anyways, I think that was the birth of my first Hodgy Humor image.
